My Education & Experience

I have a Bachelor's degree in writing and children’s literature from Portland State University where I studied privately under editor, Michelle McCann. I'm a longtime member of the SCBWI and have furthered my education through conferences and the Institute of Children's Literature.

I have worked in the children’s acquisition department of Ooligan Press. I have worked as a transcriber, editor, and proofreader for the medical industry, and spent several years as the children's book buyer for my local indie bookstore.

My work has appeared in various children’s magazines including Cobblestone Publishing's science magazine, Odyssey. Manuscripts I've worked on have been published with such houses as Simon and Schuster, Macmillan, and Sleeping Bear Press.

Have a Story to Tell?

I believe in the worth of our stories, in their power. I also believe there is a child out there who is waiting and needing to read yours.

I'd like to help you find your voice and your courage to share the story that's in your heart.

I think many of us write because at some point on our journey we were changed by something we read, something someone else was brave enough to write, and we hope that we can do the same for another, that our words, our hearts, our selves will touch another soul out there and make their life a bit better.

And while finding the perfect words to capture a feeling, a moment, a truth, usually results in the most incredible high, it can also be hard, lonely, and often terrifying work.

As writers we put a piece of ourselves onto every page. We then send those pages out into the world for all to see and wait for the inevitable verdict: Did we create something of worth or are we frauds?

How terrifying is that? There are few professions that ask so much.

"Talia has a talent for critiquing and editing. She was a great help to me with Creature Count: A Prehistoric Rhyme. It was published by Farrar, Straus, & Giroux. It also won the Barbara Karlin Grant given by SCBWI."

~Brenda Huante, Author

Thank you for being honest with me in your critiques. Without that, I would have stopped before the story was done. I would not have kept digging to find the gems in the dirt. I get lost in the music of the words, and you were able to block out the noise and show me where the story was suffering because I was rocking out instead of writing on. With your help, this has become a piece of work I can be proud of. I can't wait to thank you, loud and proud, in the credits when this is published!
